SOUTH-EASTERN BREVITIES.
The Presbyterians at Lucindale drew upon a wide range of talent in connection with a concert held there under the auspices of their church recently, in
which the Kingston and Lucindale congregations pulled together with great success. The local correspondent of the Naracoorte " Herald" states that on entering the institute hall ond could not help admiring the banners and Scotch emblems to be seen on all sides, and which presented a striking appearance. These were kindly lent by the Miliicent Caledonian society. By 830 o'clock the hall was packed, and the takings amounted to over £11 which, with the picnic receipts of £3, made a total of £14 for the day. The following programme was carried out: Bagpipe selection, Messrs T.J., Mac, and J.J.Ferguson ; song, " Jessie, the flower of Dumblane." Miss Sharpe (encored) ; duet, " Norine Moureen," Misses Ellison aud MacLachlan; recitation, " A wee Scotch nicht," Mr George Rackham; song "Bonnie Dundee," Mr W.S. Ferguson (encored); song " Down the burn, Davey, lad," Mr Mac Ferguson ; quartette by Lucindale company, " Bring back my bonny to me," Miss Rossie Mathieson (soprano). Miss Kate McLachlan (alto), Mr W. S. Ferguson (basso), and Mr J.J.Ferguson (tenor), (encored); trio, " The Spanish guitar," Mr George Robson, and Messrs W.S. and J.J. Ferguson (encored); song, " Aunie Laurie," Mr T. Bellinger; bagpipe selections, Messrs T.J., Mac, and J.J.Ferguson; song. Mr Bellinger (tenor), aud Mr Mac Ferguson (basso), (encored); song, " Scots wha hae," Mr J.J. Ferguson (encore, " Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond"); comic song. Mr F. L. Gibson (encored); recitation, " Wreck of the Nancy Bell," Mr H. Carmichael; duet, " Hunting tower," Miss Kate Ferguson and Mr W. S. Ferguson (encored); chorus by the company of performers, "Good-night, ladies." Miss Kate Ferguson, of Furner, looked exceedingly nice in her Highland costume, and, with her brother (Mr W. S. Ferguson), received tremendous applause from a most appreciative audience. We hope to again meet Miss Ferguson on the platform in Lucindale, also Miss Wehl, of Furner, aud Messrs Mac and J. D. Ferguson, also of Furner, and Miss Rossie Matheson, of Lucindale, this being the first appearance 'of these performers before a Lucindale audience. Mrs G. Robson, Miss Kate Ferguson, and Miss H. Ellison were the accompanists for the concert. A dance was held in the institute hall at the conclusion of the Scottish concert. Dancing was kept going until 3 a.m. During the evening two Scotch reels were danced, the first by Miss Kate Ferguson, Miss Wehl, Mr J.J. Ferguson, and Mr T. Bellinger, and the second reel by Miss M. Ferguson, Miss Wehl, and Messrs W.S. and Mac Ferguson. The music for the Scotch reels was supplied by Messrs J.D. and Mac Ferguson (bagpipes).
Obituary: 19 Apr 1918, Portland, Vic.
Portland Guardian (Vic. : 1876 - 1953), Friday 19 April 1918, page 2
THE LATE MR. WM. FERGUSON.--The "South Eastern Times," Millicent, South Australia, makes the following reference to the death of Mr. Wm. Ferguson:-The Grim Reaper has gathered in a fine old Scotchman and a good Australian in the person of Mr. William Ferguson, J.P., whose death, at the age of 74 years, was briefly recorded in our last issue. The late Mr. Ferguson was one of a band of men from the Land o'Cakes who did much to lay the foundations of the present era of prosperity in South Australia. He first settled at Laura, and later spent several years in the Snowtown district. Coming to Millicent in the early eighties, he selected land at Furner, and afterwards added to his holding by purchase of several adjoining properties, notably those of the late Messrs, Reid and Kilsby. He also had big grazing areas at the Woakwine, and in the vicinity of Lake Hawdon. He was a successful farmer and grazier, but always had time to spare for any movement to advance the well-being of the community in which he lived. He took an active and a lively interest in all public bodies in the Millicent, Kennion, and Beachport districts. He was the chairman of the Kennion district council for several terms, and was also a member of the Beachport council. The Caledonian Society enjoyed his services as chief in earlier years, and most other public bodies claimed him at various times. The deceased gentleman was a typical Scotsman, and popular whereever he went. His home at Furner, "Gowan Brae," was always open to every-one, and particularly to "Brither Scots." He was one of the best judges of draught stock in the Millicent district. He was also secretary of the Furner Presbyterian Church for 20 years, and also had charge of the local Post office for a similar period. In 1903 the late Mr. Ferguson visited the land of his birth, and returned to Australia after an absence of six months. A large family survive him. Mrs Ferguson, senr., lives in Portland, where her late husband took up his residence eight years ago. Other members of the family are: Mr J. D. Ferguson, (Gippsland, Victoria), Messrs. Wm. Ferguson, and C. Ferguson, New South Wales; Mr T. J. Ferguson (Lucindale), Private Alec Ferguson (on active service), Mesdames A. Robson (Konetta), W. Robson (Baker's Range), and W. E. Williams (Millicent), and Misses E. and M. Ferguson, Portland.
William married Emily ASHBY, daughter of Thomas ASHBY and Teresa FILLISTON (PHILISTON,PHILLISTINE, FILLASTON). Emily was born on 2 Dec 1852 in Stanley Flat, S.A., was christened on 3 Jan 1853 in Clare district?, S.A., and died on 9 May 1927 in Portland, Vic., at age 74. The cause of her death was Carcinoma of the Face - Cardiac failure.
Marriage Notes: The Wesleyan Chapel opened in July of 1857 by the Reverend William Butters, who described his journey from Adelaide, and the weather, as "the worst he had encountered"... (a good start to the life of a Church), Roscrow (pronounced "Rose-crow"). Saved from demolition when it fell into total disrepair, with careful attention to detail, this former Wesleyn Church is today a stunning Bed and Breakfast.
Children from this union were:
• Marriage Certificate: 1 Oct 1874, Clare, S.A.

Her father Thomas Ashby had several hundred acres at Stanley Flat from 1850 to 1888. Sold land for a school and church.
Emily travelled from Adelaide to Beachport by ship "Umarella" with her daughters when the family moved to Furner. Emily who was a large woman, was lifted off the Ship by a crane (sitting in a chair) as she would not walk down the plank. While word was sent to Furner for William to come and collect Emily and the girls, they were looked after by Mr. William Southerland, the grandfather of Drake Sutherland.
The Umarella was sold to China, when the crew and passengers sighted China they all rushed to the one side of the ship. The ship capsised and sank.
