18. James Shaw FERGUSON was born on 14 Oct 1878 in Belalie, S.A. and died on 15 Jul 1935 in Pinnaroo, S.A., at age 56.
General Notes: JAMES SHAW FERGUSON
Pinnaroo 'Miracle of the Mallee' p 190
Born at Jamestown, James Shaw Ferguson attended school there and spent his early years working on his father's farm. Several years later, Jim joined the W.A.Railways, and while working in that State, married Miss Ada Gardiner, formerly of Mitcham S.A. They met while Ada was staying in the same boaedinghouse as James.
Four years later, Jim and his youngest brother Donald took up virgin allotments north of Pinnaroo. With a brother-in-law, Hubert Davis (who married Elizabeth Ferguson) they left Jamestown by train with their horses, wagons and other belongings. The wives and families followed by train 2 months later and arrived 23 March 1910.
Although Bert Davis did not remain in the district for long, one of his daughters, Nancy, later returned as the wife of George Venning. Another daughter Jean married Eric (later Sir Eric) Smart, who became W.A.'s biggest wheat producer. Don Ferguson sold his farm and in 1923 with his wife Rose (nee Stevens) and family, moved to Temora NSW.
Another brother-in-law of James and Don, Richard Hay (who married Catherine Ferguson) later took up land south of Pinnaroo and farmed there for 9 years.
Throughout his life in the area, Jim Ferguson was a leading resident, who was actively involved in community affairs at Parilla Well and Pinnaroo. He was a man of friendly disposition,- the essence of kindliness, tactful in business, and a wise-adjudicator
In the smaller community of Parilla Well, Jim served as Secretary of the Hall Committee and Ag. Bureau; and was a patron and loyal supporter of the Football Club.
Prominent amongst Mr. Ferguson's public activities was his association with the Pinnaroo District Council. A representative of the Pinnaroo North Ward, he served 4 years as chairman, but had not sought re-election to that position a few weeks prior to his sudden passing. An ardent supporter and for many years a committee member of the Pinnaroo Ag. Society, Jim was also actively associated with the Masonic Lodge and was Master in 1930.
Jim became ill while taking provisions down to a camp in the desert and was brought back to Pinnaroo, but passed away in hospital 4 days later on 15 July 1935 aged 56 years.
Ada remained at the farm until her only son married. She then moved to live in Adelaide amd, except for a fall, enjoyed reason¬ably good health until her passing at the age of 85 years in 1966.
The eldest child Douglass, who married Donald Wurfel, was a worthy companion in her husband's many activities. Doug has been a leading supporter of the Pinnaroo Ag. Society from its earliest days and was one of the first ladies to be awarded an honorary life membership.
John, the only son, continued to farm the home property "Forfar Brae' until he sold it in 1955. "Jack" or "Ferg" as he was known, wife Melva (nee Bowman) and their 3 girls Faye, June & Claire, then moved to live at Auburn. During his life at Pinnaroo, Jack served for a number of years as the representative for Pinnaroo North Ward on the District Council. He had also been an excellent footballer and captained Parilla Well.
Margaret, the youngest child, married Ronald Marshall Arnold, a grandson of Richard Marshall, the breeder of the widely sown wheat variety Yandilla King, and many other varieties.
A few years after their marriage, Margaret and Ron moved to the South-East (timber industry) where their children Cynthia & William were born. Later in life, Margaret was re-married to Noel Burge and now lives at Lyndoch.
James and Donald purchased Section 139 in 1911.
James purchased Section 149 comprising 592 acres in 1909. This was transferred to James & Donald in 1913 and to John James in 1935. Sold to Ian, Keith & Ken Wurfel in 1955.

Children from this union were:
Marriage Certificate: 1908.
General Notes: Hubert Arthur Oliver Davis, son of William Davis & Mary Ann Badman, born 17.2.1873 at Riverton and was the brother of William Benjamin Davis who married Laura Sarre.
His life story somewhat of a mystery but I believe the following to be correct.
H.A.DAVIS (Bert) came to Jamestown in 1903 and bought the Bakers shop in Ayr Street from W.Sloan. He married in 1904 Sarah Elizabeth Axford, daughter of an early storekeeper of Jamestown, T.P.Axford. Sarah was born at Moonta 4.6.1868 and died in 1906 together with their stillborn daughter and is buried in the Jamestown Cemetery.
In 1907 Bert Davis extended his shop to a 2-storey. The upper storey of which was used as a residence while the ground floor was entirely remodelled and decorated in white as the prevailing tone in the shop, while the spacious tea-room occupied the space adjoining and was separated from the shop by a curtained arch. The window and furniture served to display tempting eatables to the greatest advantage.
He sold the shop to J.S.Stephens in 1910.
Hubert Davis (married to Elizabeth May Ferguson), left Jamestown by train with their horses, waggons and other belongings and moved to Pinnaroo 23 March 1910. Hubert (Bert) did not remain in the district for long, and according to "The'Smart Heritage" Hubert & Elizabeth had 6 daughters. Bert went to Adelaide and trained as a Methodist minister, but with his fiery Welsh temper, he resigned when they wouldn't give him an overseas missionary position. He then formed a very successful real estate company in Adelaide, H.A.Davis '96 selling city and nearby country properties. He was a very astute businessman. The family used to go from one house to another because he would sell the house from under them if a client preferred that house.
At time of death his occupation was listed as retired grazier. One daughter Nancy later returned to Pinnaroo as the wife of George Venning.
Another daughter of Hubert & Elizabeth was Jean Constance b 1914 in Adelaide and known as Jenny. Was a trainee nurse at Gawler and married Eric Fleming Smart in 1938. Eric, later Sir Eric, became one of W.A's biggest wheat producers. Jean & Eric had 3 children, Peter Davis Smart (1941), Helen Ferguson-Smart (1943) and Pauline Erica Smart (1947).
Hubert Davis purchased Jamestown Section 49 comprising 558 acres in 1910. Sold again in 1911

He is a son of the late Mr. Richard Brooks, who came to South Australia in the year 1856, and was subsequently engaged in various callings at Paradise. The gentleman under review began to work, for his living at the early age of ten years, and was for a long period engaged in the farming industry in the dry districts of Yalpara, north-east of Orroroo. He came to Jamestown in 1901, and established the Excelsior chaff-mills in conjunction with Mr. Wilson, under the style of Brooks & Wilson, with branch mills at Hamley Bridge. This partnership was dissolved in 1904, and Mr. Brooks became sole proprietor of the Jamestown business, from these well-equipped mills carrying on a considerable export trade with Sydney, Newcastle, and other ports of the Commonwealth. It is a coincidence worthy of note that as a lad of fourteen he worked on the very property of which he is to-day owner for a wage of ten shillings a week. Mr.Brooks is agent at Jamestown for the Massey- Harris machinery. He was elected to a seat on the Town Council in 1907. He is prominently associated with the Presbyterian Church, and occupies the office of a manager in this organization, and is a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. He has been twice married, his first wife, by whom he has a family of two sons and two daughters, dying in 1893. His second marriage took place in 1900, the present Mrs, Brooks being a daughter of Mr. James Ferguson, formerly of Jamestown, by whom he has issue two sons. William Robson was born on the 29 December 1862 at Creecoona, Cannawigra near Bordertown where his father was an overseer for a Mr Laidlaw. In 1865 they shifted to Padthway where his father worked for a Mr Lawson as a overseer on "Padthaway Station" for four years. In 1869 they moved to Sweedes Flat, south of Bordertown where they worked a scrub station. They sold the scrub station in 1871 and selected land at Keppoch near Padthaway where pastoral pursuits were entered upon for five years and considerable advance made in the industry. In 1876 they sold their Keppoch land to Padthaway Station and the family purchased Bakers Range, a property near Lucindale consisting of about 1,500 acres of freehold, and right of commonage was obtained from the Crown which entitled him to graze a certain number of sheep on the surrounding plains. Six years later Will was admitted into partnership with his father, and held the property conjointly with him until 1904, when Mr.Robson, sen., died. William inherited a portion of the estate which had been considerably extended during the period of partnership and embraced 40,000 acres of land. Will later split up with his brother Peter and took over Bakers Range North (Wyena). He also owned the country Omar, Sneiders and Hidden Valley on the North side of the Naracoorte Road, and Lanes and Tivers on the South Side of the road. Bakers Range North was later sold to Bill Stock after Will died. Went gold mining to Coolgardie in W.A. in the late 90's. Rode his bicycle accross from Lucindale. He brought back some gold and had his wife's wedding ring made from some of it. His daughter Agnes Emily in 2000 still had some of the nuggets. His career as an independent pastoralist was a successful one, sheepraising constituting as heretofore the chief department of his operations. Formerly the merino monopolized the pasturage at "Baker Range Station" but in later years Will introduced crossbreds, considering this strain on the whole more profitable. Including both types he ran about 7,000 sheep. Will later owned several properties along the coast between Kingston and Beachport. He held Mount Benson from 1918 until 1930. Joe Noblet managed Mt Benson. A member of the District Council of Lucindale for three years, Mr.Robson had at all times taken a keen interest in everything affecting the welfare of the district in which he resided. On the 27th of March 1901 he married Emily, second daughter of Mr. William Ferguson, of "Gowan Brae," Furner, near Millicent, and had one daughter Agnes Emily.
Died on the 12th of June 1938 at Naracoorte, from kidney disease called Dropsey in those days.

After he married, John had a Real Estate business in Launceston, Tasmania. Reputedly had a very good reputation. Some apple orchards had the holes for the trees blasted and some not and the unblasted did not do so well. John told the potential buyers the truth. The family found it too cold and they left. John was given a beautiful brass and glass dome clock which his grandson John now has. The family moved to Gippsland and purchased a property on reclained land known as Kooweerup Swamp near Nar Nar Goon. They sold the property and retired to Frankston Vic in 1947. John's father said if any of his children got into trouble with a woman he would disinherit them. So Flo and John went away and got married and then came back later and said they had adopted a baby. Later Flo told one of her sisters the truth but she told the other sisters, so the sisters did not speak to each other for years.

General Notes: Susan Florence Bellenger was born on the 29th of March 1880 at Furner or Millicent. Married John David Ferguson on 30 Aug 1911 St Andrews Manse in Mount Gambier South Australia . They had two Children Oswald and Marjorie.
It was one of the first cars in the district. I can well remember her getting all red in the face as she cranked it up to start and manipulated the throttle. My mother, Florence, and I would have a trip to Furner by train every four years or so and someone would meet us in Mount Gambier. While in her early twenties, Rose contracted typhoid fever and nearly died. She was sent to relatives in Perth for a long holiday where a young man fell in love with her. They may have married but Annie's health was failing and she needed Rose's help. Rose came to her mother's rescue and stayed to help at home. After her mother died, Rose became the head of the Kintore household and the mother figure to younger members of the family. It was the expected thing in those days. Rose worked very hard to keep the large old house clean and tidy, as well as doing the most of the cooking, washing and ironing. Marjorie Dimsey recalls. This was told to me by my mother. She always felt that Rose sacrificed her own life to carry on the home and family at Kintore. This is why my mother considered Rose was given such a raw deal during the events which followed Grandpa Arthur's death. Grandpa had always told Rose not to worry about money as some day she would be a wealthy woman. Then, within a year of his death when he was becoming senile, Arthur was conned into making a will. He made that will in all good faith that the right thing would be done by his family. These were depression years. Undoubtedly, money was tight, but the family was informed by the executors that they had to move out of the Kintore. The land was eventually sold on a depressed market leaving the family in extremely straitened circumstances. Marjory Dimsey continues - Firstly, Allen (Bill) came to our Nar-Nar-Goon property to work for my father. Later, Auntie Rose arrived with all the possessions she could carry. Auntie Rose was a proud lady and she was very miserable because she hated being dependent on us. She housekept for Bill and my brother while my father and my mother took me to Mildura for a holiday. Then her cousin, Sarah Lockwood, introduced her to friends who ran a guest house at St Kilda. Auntie Rose regained her independence by working as a cook. Later, I met Auntie Rose while she was living with Auntie Daisy in Adelaide and became very fond of her for her kindness and help. But she still yearned for her independence. One day, just by chance, Auntie Rose met a Church of England vicar. He recalled her kindness to him many years before at the Kintore and used his influence to settle her into an Anglican home where she was very happy. I took my mother over to Adelaide by plane for Auntie Rose's 80th birthday. This was quite an ordeal as mother had never flown before. Not long after, Auntie Rose became ill and it was diagnosed as cancer. Although she still insisted on her independence, Reg, Kath, Daisy and her many friends gave her all she needed and Bill and Ron came from Streaky Bay whenever possible. Roseville Annie Bellinger died in June, 1961 and was buried in the Adelaide Centennial Park Cemetery. She was a very fine character, rather blunt but she had a heart of gold and she certainly put more into life than she gained from it." Marjorie Dimsey also recalls the role of her mother, Susan Florence, (known by the family as Florence) and the support given to Annie and younger members of the family. Florence was the second child and daughter of Annie and Arthur and, like her sister Rose, had been born at Barnham House in Clinton Lane at Millicent. They had been educated by Clara Ward, their cousin from Tasmania. Marjorie Dimsey recalls that, as far as she knew, the older Bellinger children had not been sent to school. Nevertheless, they all had managed to write good letters. Florence had always regretted, however, that her education had not been as good as she would have liked. Although only twelve months separated Rose and Florence in ages, their personalities were very different. Rose had always been the practical hard-working one with little interest in clothes. Florence had loved dancing and pretty clothes and it was easy to picture her enjoyment at the crowded Kintore dances as her father played the accordian. But, like her sister, Rose, Florence had also played a major role in supporting her mother during her declining health. When Florence married John Ferguson, they moved to Tasmania but found the climate too cold. John bought a motor bike and set off along the eastern coastline until he found land he liked in the Darling Downs. He wired Florence, then staying at Furner, to send on their luggage. But fate decreed otherwise. On his return journey he stayed overnight at the Nar-Nar-Goon Hotel(Vic.). Here, he met a land agent who was opening an area of reclaimed land known as Kooweerup Swamp. This chance meeting led to the Ferguson family finally settling at Nar-Nar-Goon. In 1947, John and Florence sold their Nar-Nar-Goon property and retired to Frankston where Florence died on December 13, 1971. But, throughout this time, close contact had been maintained with the other family members of Annie and Arthur.

Orange Blossom. Our readers have been made acquainted with the fact that Miss May Ferguson, daughter of Sergeant Ferguson of this town, was to be married.shortly. This information was through the publication given of marks of esteem for her by members of several of the semi-public institutions in the town with which she was associated. Notwithstanding this, a good deal of interest was created in the actual event, which took place yesterday at the family home, Cliff street. Flags were flying from the Town Hall and several other private flagstaffs in the town, but through the wedding being a quiet, private one, the public was unable to make any popular demonstration. However, the departure on the honeymoon was known would be by the afternoon train and a good number attended to make the send off a hearty one. Some disappointment was felt at the North station being the one for entraining, to which the happy couple were driven, accompanied by a large number of personal friends. As already stated, the ceremony took place at the home, and the happy duty of uniting Miss May Ferguson, third daughter of Mr D. Ferguson, sergeant of police, to Mr George Robson, of Kingston, South Australia, was entrusted to the Rev. F. E. Yeaman, of the Portland Presbyterian Church, the ceremony being witnessed by a large number of the more personal friends of the family, The bride wore a most becoming dress of brown tafetta voile, relieved with cream with brown hat trimmed with tulle and feathers. The bridesmaid, Miss Marjorie Ferguson, wore cream serge, white felt hat trimmed with brown. Mr. Arthur Campbell was best man. The ceremony took place in the drawing room and the breakfast in the dining room, The presents were exceedingly numerous, and were from friends near and at considerable distance away. Mr and Mrs Robson proceed by train to Casterton, and from thence on to Kingston, their new home.
